It starts with a couple in 1964 in the mod subculture [[link])] named John and Rachel during the height of the mod scene's popularity. They are madly in love, coming home from a late-night amphetamine party at a coffee bar at about 3 AM. John is driving home in his Vespa [[link] with Rachel on the back. John, still feeling the aftereffects on the amphetamines, makes a sharp turn and Rachel, also still a little buzzed from the party, falls off the back and is killed. John pulls over, and runs out into the street to retrieve Rachel's body, causing a major traffic accident in the process. After the funeral for Rachel a little while later, John goes to court with charges of accidental manslaughter, drugs, and property damage (for the cars). He, as a minor, gets off with merely a $2500 fine, 1 year in juvenile hall, and probation.
1 year later: John is out of juvey, his parents are still working to pay off fine and are pissed at John about it. He is still majorly depressed about his year in jail, probation, parents, Rachel, and life.He goes to his friend Jeremy who tries to help him through it all, but after a long discussion/argument, ultimately ends up making it all worse. All Rachel's friends viciously hate John and he gets an extreme guilt trip from her best friend.
Now with absolutely nothing to depend on, John becomes even more depressed, almost suicidal, and acts reckless in his subculture's famous streetfights against the rival Rockers, in a futile attempt at trying to die. However, one rocker, Mike, shows sympathy to John, and the two eventually start bonding and becoming close friends. John then starts to blame the Mod lifestyle and everything about it for Rachel's death. In a fit of depressed rage, he destroys his prized Vespa and becomes a Rocker himself, the one thing his life depended on fighting against. He ditches his old Mod friends, Jeremy, Mark, and George, for Rockers, Mike, Tom, and Jeff.
A few days later, after John has somewhat settled into the Rocker world, he still is consistently haunted by memories of Rachel but is now filled with anger instead of sadness. He enters a streetfight more fiercely than ever, but in his fury he fails to realize that he is beating up the same Mods he used to be best friends with. With one strong punch, he knocks Jeremy, the same guy who tried to help him get over Rachel, unconscious. Right before the punch hits though, John has a flashback of the night Rachel died, another of his sleepless nights in jail, and a final vision of Jeremy helping him get through it all. After these images flash though John's head, he realizes that he just knocked his ex-best friend unconscious and undergoes a major mental breakdown. Amidst the raging violence around him, John kneels down over Jeremy's body and experiences a spiritual revelation of an incarnation of Rachel as an angel. She gives him a long comforting speech as time seems to have frozen around John and his ethereal girlfriend. They share a kiss as time unfreezes. John stands up, feeling redeemed. He picks up Jeremy's body, carries it home, and changes himself into an outfit incorporating both Mod and Rocker culture: Converse Chuck Taylors, blue Levi's drainpipe jeans, and a leather motorcycle jacket over a Ben Sherman button-down shirt. He takes care of Jeremy, watching him till he comes to, then they both break down and cry after a heartfelt apology by John. They return to the scene of the still-raging streetfight, where John manages to bring both his Mod and Rocker companions to peace. He knows this will not stop the conflict, but it is at least a halt in violence for now. Afterwards, as he walks home, having destroyed his Vespa, he experiences yet another revelation from Rachel, who tells him that it wasn't the Mod lifestyle that killed her, it was her own stupid, drug-induced mistake. Following thism John returns himself to a full mod outfit, trading back his Converse for Winklepickers [[link] and his leather jacket for a Harrington [[link] he keeps peace with his old Rocker friends, kind of having transcended the fights, and for the sake of the past. The story concludes with John driving home on a brand-new Vespa home from an amphetamine party at a coffee bar at about 3 AM, as he feels Rachel's spiritual embrace as he heads down the road.
